India’s first International Conference on LPG takes place in Bhubaneswar

An International Conference on LPG was held on September1-2, 2016 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. A first of its kind in the country, the conference was themed on LPG – A Catalyst for Social Change and was inaugurated by Hon’ble Governor of Jharkhand Smt.Draupadi Murmu in the presence of Minister of State (I/C) Petroleum & Natural Gas, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan.

Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Murmu shared her experiences of living without LPG in her village and appreciated the initiatives of the Government in making clean fuel accessible to every household, especially rural India. Shri Pradhan spoke about how the conference will go down as an eye opener on LPG as a tool for social change and is a pathway for a much robust intervention into the LPG sector by stakeholders & scholars and ensuring its reach to every home.

The event was also graced by Ms. Lakshmi Puri, Assistant Secretary General, United Nations Entity for Gender Equality & Empowerment of Women, who highlighted the impact of LPG centric campaigns on achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 2030 and acknowledged PAHAL & PMUY’s contribution to Hon’ble PM's vision of #SabkaSaathSabkaVikas. Noted Environmentalist Prof. Kirk Smith also applauded the initiatives & spoke about the vital role of social marketing and Digital India initiatives in enabling campaigns like #GiveItUp and Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to reach out to the people.

The valedictory session of the conference was chaired by Minister of Health & Family Welfare Shri J.P. Nadda, who laid great emphasis on the various health concerns of cooking with firewood & charcoal, especially for women & children and highlighted the importance of LPG in battling various respiratory diseases. The conference was attended by more than 300 delegates from over 10 countries including and over 40 speakers participated in the event with their inputs on LPG.
